The short version

Human Design is a map of how your energy is built to move through the world. From the exact moment and place of your birth, it calculates a chart — called a bodygraph — that describes how you're designed to make decisions, spend energy, and interact with other people.

The system was synthesised in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu, who combined the astrological wheel, the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, the chakra system, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life into a single framework, tied together by the positions of the planets at your birth. Whatever you make of that origin story — and people make many things of it — the result is a remarkably specific, remarkably personal mirror that millions of people find genuinely useful for understanding themselves.

How a chart is calculated

Everything starts from three facts: the date, time, and place you were born. From these, the planetary positions are computed twice — once for the moment of birth (your conscious 'Personality'), and once for a point roughly 88 days earlier (your unconscious 'Design'). Each planet's position activates specific gates in the bodygraph, and the pattern of those activations determines everything else: which centers are defined, which channels connect, and from those, your type, authority, and profile.

This is why Human Design is a calculation, not a quiz. Two people can answer personality questions identically and have completely different charts — because the chart isn't measuring how you see yourself. It's derived from when and where you arrived.

What the chart tells you

The three headline outputs are your type (one of five broad energy configurations — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector), your authority (the body's way of knowing what's correct for you, from emotional clarity to in-the-moment instinct), and your profile (one of twelve character archetypes describing how you learn and meet the world).

Beneath those sit the mechanics: nine centers that are each either defined (a fixed, reliable quality in you) or open (where you take in and amplify other people), thirty-six channels, and sixty-four gates. The deeper you go, the more specific the mirror becomes.

Is it real?

Honestly: Human Design is not a science, and you should be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that birth time determines personality. What it is, is a structured mirror — a system of self-reflection with an unusual knack for asking you precise questions about how you work, and giving you permission to stop working the way you don't.

Many people find that the chart describes patterns they've felt their whole lives but never had words for. Whether that's mechanism or mirror, the usefulness is real. Our advice is the same as the system's own: take what resonates, test it against your lived experience, and let your own experience be the final authority.

Questions people ask

Do I need my exact birth time?
It helps a great deal. Some parts of the chart (like type) are often stable across a few hours; others (like profile and authority) can shift with the clock. If you don't know your time, a noon chart still reveals a lot — and birth certificates, hospital records, or a parent's memory can often narrow it down.
Can my Human Design change over time?
No. The chart is calculated from the moment of your birth, so it never changes. What changes is how you live it — the system's language for this is moving from your 'not-self' patterns back toward your design.
Is Human Design the same as astrology?
They share an input — planetary positions at birth — but the systems differ completely from there. Human Design maps positions onto the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and a nine-centered body chart, and its outputs (type, authority, strategy) have no astrological equivalent.
What's the first thing I should learn from my chart?
Type and authority. Type describes how your energy is designed to engage with the world; authority describes how decisions are meant to feel when they're right. Those two alone are enough to experiment with for months.
